When I heard about the book Ten Things I Learned from Bill Porter I couldn’t wait to read it and rushed out to purchase it right away. There aren’t any other books written about a real Watkins salesman that I know of. I wasn’t disappointed and I learned a few things from Bill too. Bill Porter is a Watkins man through and through. Disabled with cerebral palsy, he had the worst sales route and was competing against real go getters (who didn’t have his challenges) he managed to become Watkins Saleman of the Year. He has a great deal of pride, never let his physical limitations hold him back but patiently persisted at selling Watkins products. He wasn’t afraid to seek help when he needed it and treated everyone with respect and dignaty.
If you aren’t a big reader and would like to know Bill’s inspiring story the movie will give you a good insight. I personally prefer books over movies but I really enjoyed watching this one. William H. Macy did an outstanding job of portaying Bill. I’d never heard of Macy but I’ve become a fan since watching this movie and several others he stars in.
I highly reccomend the book for an inspirational read and the movie for the whole family.
